A Decorating Dilemma
I am having a very hard time deciding what color of counter tops to put in, so I thought I would ask your opinions. I can't decide if I should get a nice sandy khaki color like my floors, or if I should get black. We wanted to install granite, but we have just about decided we will never have the 3k we need to have it done. I think I am ready to settle for a granite looking laminate. Below are some pictures of my kitchen as it is now--so tell me, what color counter top would look best.

I feel like I have too many colors going on with these early 90s counter tops.
A close up shot of the green counter.
Thanks in advance for your help, my friends.

We have a blackish faux granite, and we really like it.

I usually don't love black (especially gloss black) unless it is of the fieldstone variety. But, obviously, I'm in the minority! And it would be pretty with your nice floor color.

I would probably go with a hard surface like Corian or one of the other granite alternatives in a granite like color choice. A nice option would be a speckle that has the shade of your floors, the antique white of your cabinets, and black or grey. It would look so pretty with the stainless steel knobs!

Here is a look I like for inspiration!

I love your window treatment! Pretty!

Wow. We are kinda doing the same thing. We are looking into a recycled glass product that almost looks like granite but is cheaper and more durable. I like it a lot but I've only see it on HGTV.

I love the color of the floor and the tiles. Black is the color of the times but you might think about a speckled or flecked counter with more of a slate look to it. If it were my kitchen, I would go with a deep red for the walls use slate color for the counters and make curtains to tie it all in. Actually, that’s almost how my kitchen is now.

Great plaque on the wall too.

I asked dh for his opinion, and we thought about faux slate contertops. I'm just not sure about all black in there, but if you like it, go for it. What do I know? Dh brought a countertop sample home, and I said that it just wasn't what I wanted, and 5 days and several samples later, I found the perfect one. I was so excited and brought it home for it to be the EXACT SAME as dh originally picked out. Ha! Maybe dh should make a house call....:)

I checked out that link from kittyhox. I liked that. What did you think?

Personally I would go with a countertop color that has more earthy colors. Remember, any countertop, no matter what the material, is a heavily saturated color, meaning things around it will take on the color of the countertop, and not vice-versa. Black would be OK, but maybe not my first choice. You also might want to consider adding handle-type pulls to your drawers only (not the doors) to warm up your cabinets a bit. The granite formica they make these days is wonderful!

I like your floor tile!

I don't think you could go wrong with black or earth tones. Either would look great.

okay...yet another opinion - you asked! I wouldn't go with a sand color primarily because your walls are yellow and they would "blend" too much. A deeper, darker neutral would be fine. Of your two choices I would opt for the black (not solid) with, as some others have suggested, a granite look (brown or sand in it would be nice). However, if you found a granite look, that was more in the brown/neutral family that is dark enough that it contrasts with the wall color and blends with the floor then that could be great, too.

Me again.
I mentioned you in my post today. : )
I thought of a draw back to black. We recently had ants on our counter and didn't know it since the little buggers were the same color as the granite! ugh!
(we have granite tile not the solid kind. It's cheaper!)

I think black! My kitchen looks similar to yours, although my wall color is different....my floors look almost the same tile but maybe not quite as dark, white cabinets and black countertops. I can send you a pic if you want to see mine, it might be on my blog somewhere already and I'll look for it if you want to see it. I think a color similar to your floor would blend too much with the colors you have. I like your kitchen a lot! And you know we have to see it afterwards!

At first I thought black. But then I saw your paint and curtain color and thought your home might be done in warm colors. If so, I'd go with a sandy, khaki color. Black against the white will give it a mod look that might not match anything else. :)

Have fun deciding!!!

I'm not usually fond of black, but in your case, I think it would be great!

I am tempted to say black, but I think the khaki color would blend in better. Beautiful kitchen, by the way :)
God bless :)

I vote for the more earthy tones, only because I feel like they would go with more. I definitely would not base my decision on the color of my walls. Your walls may not stay that color forever, and paint color is easy to change. Countertops - not so much! Plus, I think black might not be as good for resale, should the time come you have to move. Good luck!
